Digital Marketing Manager Kris Costello shares insight on juggling positions and self-advocacy in the workplace
San Bernardino, Calif.- Wednesday, October 20, 2020, Kris Costello – Digital Marketing Manager – spoke to the students of CoyotePR about his experience in the marketing field as a self-advocate, and how to make it in any industry with little to no prior experience.
Costello is currently working as Digital Marketing Manager with the intention of building enough experience to enter the career path of his dreams -- Sports Marketing. He tells students that this is a normal way to navigate any career and that perseverance is oftentimes more valuable than experience.
In any career field, internships and freelance work are key to getting your foot in the door and noticed by hiring managers and recruiters. Costello adds that accepting any position offered to you, big or small, is one of the best ways of networking and letting your name be known in your chosen industry. All experiences are good experiences.
For Costello, gaining experience meant applying to up to 15 job positions a day and attending upwards of 100 interviews, regardless of whether he was interested or not. He eased the minds of anxious students by informing them that it’s okay to accept work in positions you are uninterested in, as long as it gets you the experience needed for the career of your choice.
“Be well-rounded and be able to jump into any situation,” advised Costello. Many positions, including digital marketing managers, often wear many hats and juggle the duties of several different professions. From creating ads, graphic designing, video editing, and photography, Costello is constantly learning new skills in order to improve his overall work performance.
Costello advised students to spend their free
time creating a portfolio, researching companies that are of interest,
advancing various skill sets, and applying to as many open job positions as
possible. He shares that even the simplest of jobs,
internships, or freelance work can be utilized in your favor and can be
showcased to future employers.
